change commit message and how to get out of the editor mode...?

Git-Newby (of course), but I wanted to update my git commit message and I typed "git commit —amend" and got into what looked like editor mode, but then couldn’t figure out how to get out of it. Later checked my git log and didn't see my change, either. So how do I update the message and get out of the editor view and back to where I was?
